Do your children enjoy writing, drawing or painting what they observe in nature? Maybe they enjoy collecting found items such as leaves, flower petals or feathers and sticking them into a book for safe keeping? One way we foster nature journaling is to spend lost of time in nature and where possible, have our art caddy near by when inspiration strikes.
What’s in our art caddy:
- Journals with blank pages
- Lead pencils, eraser and a pencil sharpener
- Coloured pencils (Lyra brand)
- Pastels or crayons
- Watercolour paint palette, water-colour pencils and paint brushes
Other items you could include:
- Glue/paste
- Scissors
- Charcoal for drawing
- Pens/markers
- magnifying glass
- binoculars
- small microscope
- basket, bucket or bag for collecting items
- Field guides

My children are free to use their journals any way they please, but here are some Nature journal ideas for those who may be interested in ways one can use a nature journal:
- sketches
- pressed flowers or other found items
- poetry
- photographs
- collage
- leaf or bark rubbings
